What is Design for manufacturability?

Design for manufacturability, that is, from the beginning of the design to consider the manufacturability of the product, to improve the through rate and reliability of the product, making the product easier to manufacture while reducing manufacturing costs.

Design for manufacturability is based on the idea of parallel design, in the design phase of the product on the comprehensive consideration of the manufacturing process requirements, testing requirements and the rationality of the assembly, through the means of design to control the cost, performance and quality of the product.

Generally speaking, manufacturability design mainly includes three aspects: PCB board manufacturability design, PCBA assembly design, and low manufacturing cost design.

PCB board manufacturability design is mainly in the PCB board manufacturing point of view, consider the manufacturing process parameters, so as to improve the board through rate, reduce the process of communication costs. For example, line width, line spacing is designed to be sufficient to meet the real requirements of the factory, the distance between the hole to the line, the hole to the hole is compliant, these points should be considered clearly at the time of design.

PCBA assembly design is to stand in the PCBA assembly processing point of view to consider how to regulate the layout, how to correctly design the PCB package, the device's thermal balance and so on. Specification of the layout is generally considered between the device and the distance between the device can not be too close, can not occur spatial interference, PCB packaging is mainly based on soldering performance considerations, components and PCB pads need to be matched, as well as the consideration of the device's pins, it is enough to climb the tin margin.

Low manufacturing costs, is also very important, a product's market competitiveness, a large factor is dependent on its cost, based on cost, from two considerations, the first is the choice of manufacturing process, the designer needs to try to optimise and simplify; the second is the need to master the board factory's offer law, each board factory has a set of its own offer logic, or perhaps the board factory's offer rules will be biased, but the vast majority are pretty much the same. Perhaps the quotation rules of the board factory will be deviated, but the vast majority of them are more or less the same.

In summary, it is not difficult to find that design engineers need to consider a lot of things, a little strict company, they may have dozens of channels, hundreds of design rules, if not with the help of tools, all the human control, the chances of error are very high. However, the current market process inspection tools and software is not much, a few commercial software, most of the high price, many small and medium-sized enterprises are difficult to afford.

So how do companies typically do manufacturability analyses these days? -They will have a checklist and manually check against the checklist one by one. However this is very inefficient and also prone to errors. So much so that some companies simply skip this item and do not carry out process checks.

For this reason, Okey Circuit has its own DFM software, a software that does process checking for PCB design. It is a reliable and recommended operation analysis software, the main functions include PCB bare board analysis, PCBA assembly analysis, optimisation direction recommendation, impedance calculation and other tools.
